It just goes to show that everything changes so much from week to week in the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles, in turmoil and pretty much dead just a few weeks ago, have won 3 straight and at 8-5-1 are still in the NFC playoff hunt.

After a rout of a 30-10 victory over the hapless Cleveland Browns last night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, the Eagles woke up this morning very much alive in the NFC playoff hunt. Of course, it won’t be easy. The Eagles need to win the next 2 games — @ Washington Redskins and vs. Dallas Cowboys at home. It will also need a little help from the Atlanta Falcons or Tampa Bay Buccaneers, either of whom needs to lose one game in order for the Eagles to make the playoffs.

They way the Eagles are playing now, it doesn’t seem far-fetched to imagine that it could win the next 2 games — a total of 5 straight. The Eagles are playing the best football of the season at just the right time (OK, 2 weeks earlier would have been nice too). For now, after the way they looked just a short few weeks ago, I’m just happy they have games that mean something in December, along with a chance to make the playoffs.

Besides, who knows how next week will look? Might be much different than this week!

While I’m sure many Eagles fans will find fault with the fact that the Eagles didn’t cruise to an easy win over the former doormats of the NFC South but the truth (final score 27 – 14) is, the Falcons are actually a very good team. In fact, they may be as good as the Eagles and certainly not a team I’d want to face in the playoffs!

True, the Eagles should have put the game away with about 8 minutes left to go in the game by punching it into the end zone from about the half yard line, after 2 straight attempts, to make the score 24 – 7. But this edition of the Eagles can’t seem to make things easy on themselves, especially when it comes to scoring in the red zone.

They also could have made it easy on themselves by managing to get a first down while up 6 pts with about 3 minutes left. Instead, after gaining 8 yds on their first pass to TE Brent Celek, the Eagles couldn’t gain 2 yards and were forced to punt.

Fortunately for the Eagles, Adam Jennings muffed a punt (a questionable call) that was recovered on the Atlanta 37. Westbrook scored on a 39 yard TD run 2 plays later. Read the rest of this entry »
